Types Of Fire Extinguishers That We All Should Know

Co2 Extinguisher

Carbon dioxide extinguishers are filled under intense pressure with non-flammable carbon dioxide gas. CO2s are designed for Class B and Class C applications. The CO2 extinguisher can be identified by its strong horn and lack of a pressure scale. The pressure in the bottle is so high that when you use one of these extinguishers, a piece of dry ice will blow out the bell. Carbon dioxide is extinguished by displacing oxygen or by eliminating the oxygen portion of the fire triangle. Carbon dioxide is still very cold when it comes out of the extinguisher, and it also cools the coal.

CO2s can be unsuccessful in extinguishing Class A fires, because they may not be able to displace enough oxygen to effectively extinguish the fire.CO2 extinguishers are mainly used for electrical fire hazards and are usually the main type of fire extinguishers used in computer server rooms. CO2 extinguishers suffocate fires by displacing the fuel that the fire requires to burn. We can use it in electrical, electronic, banks, libraries, schools, etc. This is most useful when the paper is often used on large scales.

Dry powder Extinguisher  (ABC)

Generic dry powder extinguishers are also known as ABC extinguishers and can be used for class A, class B, and class C fires. Nevertheless, they should not be used in enclosed environments because the dry powder in the extinguisher can be quickly inhaled. Cleaning up the residual debris after the fire is over is not easy, either.  They may also be used for fires involving electrical equipment. This kind of fire extinguisher can be used, among many others, for fire caused by various organic materials including wood , coal, textiles, cardboard, and paper. These can also be used in fires caused by flammable liquids, including fuel and paint, as well as flammable fuels, including acetylene and liquid petroleum gas. This method of fire extinguisher would not be used for fires affecting more than 1000 V electrical appliances and cooking oil fires.

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

However, in the case of an emergency there are some simple steps and something called as P.A.S.S method which can be followedThe the appropriate type of fire extinguisher is usually installed a short distance away from the risk but you should always check the colored panel to ensure you are using the right one. If a pressure gauge is present confirm if the needle is in the green region. Stand a safe distance from the flames (dependent on the characteristics of fire extinguisher but on average it is about 8 feet) and make sure you are close to an escape path.

Use the P.A.S.S method

P – Take the pinout of handle

A – Aim for the hose at the base of the fire

            S – Squeeze the lever/handles

S – Sweep the hose from side to side moving closer as the fire gets smaller

If the flames flare up, stay at a safe distance and continue the cycle, however, if the fire is not extinguished by the time the extinguishing agent is fully used, immediately leave and wait for the fire services.

Conclusion

As you have read the above article now you can apply this knowledge in practical practice and guide others too. You have learned different types of fire extinguishers now just use the kit wherever required in the practice properly as per classes of fire.
