BASIC PAINTING PROCESS

In India, however, we do not paint our homes ourselves. We simply hire a painter and assign all decision-making to him. To be honest, learning about the painting process can only help you understand what is expected from your painter in earlier days. But now you get so much information via the internet.

Before starting the process you all should know i.e for every different wall treatment the process might change ex: If you want to paint on a textured wall, repaint on an existing wall, or if it is dampness on the wall.

For every work there is a reason, so let's see the purpose of the painting

  •  To hide defects in the surface to be painted, such as cracks, holes, patches, inaccurate levels, and unsightly offsets. To enhance the positive features such as offsets, windows, and so on.
  •  To protect and strengthen the surface against the elements as described above and by applying a coat of paint that prevents normal cracking, peeling, staining, and dusting, etc.

  •  Color is the perfect material for creating the perfect ambiance atmosphere, and painting is the most cost-effective way to do so. Color can be used to create a variety of effects and moods.

What Precaution we should take before Painting

Before beginning to paint, the structure's disease should be addressed. Water and dampness caused by rain and moisture are the main culprits in a tropical country like India. Both dampness, leakage issues should be addressed. The painting should begin after rectification and full drying. Depending on the type of paint used, a new wall takes a certain amount of time to dry.

Protect the furniture and Switch Plates

Remove all of the furniture from the room if necessary, or transfer it to the center of the room. And don't forget to cover them with a large cloth and plastic, as this will ensure that the paint has almost no effect on your furniture.

Remove the switch plate covers and spreads a large cloth to cover the floor (no, don't need to use your stack of old newspapers, the paint droppings will just seep through and stain the floor below), also, remember to cover your ceiling fan.

Apply painter's tape to other surfaces you want to cover, such as door frames, handles, window frames, floor corners, and apply the tape by pressing firmly on the edges.

The procedure of Painting :

Clean the Walls

Sandpaper can be used to clear the distemper from the surface. Likewise, it can also be wetted and scraped with a sharp plate (Patra). Examine all surfaces for dampness, cracks, and fungus and treat them as required.

If it has oil paint, apply a chemical to the wall with a brush and scrub it; it will come off in a few minutes. The chemical would be readily accessible in local painting supply stores.

In the case of carpentry work, the paint should be rubbed out to smoothen the surface or clean with soap powder.

The surface should be firm and clean.

Rub the wall with sandpaper (150no) across the whole targeted wall areas to remove any loose particles and to smoothen the surface. Wipe the area down with a clean cloth to remove any dust.

Apply 1st coat of primer on the walls

Primer, as the name suggests, is applied before the use of paint. You may skip this first stage of priming and proceed directly to putty work, but most house painters recommend it. Primers make painting simpler, easier, and last longer by transforming your focus areas into uniform surfaces that can receive paint well and serving as sealants to prevent stains from leaking through.

These can be either water-based or oil-based. So, if you decide to prime first, use a roller to spread primer uniformly over the walls, and then let dry. Allow the primer to dry for 10 to 12 hours.

Finish the walls with Putty

The hired painter should inspect whether your walls have any surface imperfections. Fill any of these cracks or holes with putty using a putty knife, scraping any excess compound as you go, and then let dry. After the putty has dried, smooth the area with very fine sandpaper or emery paper.

Apply 2nd coat of primer on the walls

You're familiar with the places where walls touch ceilings, skirting, other walls, door frames, and window frames.

Paint primer around the edges to make a few inches of parts. Then gradually cover the majority of the wall. After the primer has dried, gently sand away any bumps or irregular surfaces to smooth out the layer. The process should be repeated till the perfect level is obtained.

Now you can start with Paint

After you've primed the required surface, it's time to apply the first coat of your chosen color. Before beginning the painting project, make sure you have a plan in place. It's a good idea to start with the ceilings. Start at the top of the room and work your way down. Allow enough time for each coat of paint to dry before overcoating. Apply thin coats to prevent paint cracking or creasing. Avoid direct sunlight when applying paint to the wall.

You should apply the second coat once the wall is dry to the touch. Keep the windows open and the fans turned on during the painting project to ensure that your room is well-ventilated. Keeping the fan on in the painting helps to speed up the drying process. If it's a wet or rainy day, strategically plan to wait for the paint to dry because it can take longer than normal.

At the End of the day

Remember that choosing the right wall paint colors, finishes, and designs should represent your personality and personal preferences so concentrate on what is important to you.

Clean the Entire Room on-site

Remove all tapes from walls, door frames, and window frames and place them on one side. Make sure that any painter who had spills or splatters cleaned up the entire room.

Give some time to Dry

Finally, the duration of time it will take to complete your painting project is determined by several factors. Some spaces may take just a few hours to complete, while others may take several days.
